The current thinking in Democratic political circles is that it would be counterproductive to try and impeach Trump. First of all, the Senate has a Republican majority who have shown that political expediency is preferable to having a democratic nation. Their loyaty extends to what they want and no further. Our country doesn’t figure into the equation.
However, I think the Democrats are underestimating what Trump is trying to do. At every turn he is trying to get his way by using the mass of Bill-Barr-provided-DOJ lawyers to figure out the extent to which he can exploit the written law to his personal advantage.
And, the problem is that he might be successful. This is untested waters, because the framers of the Constitution didn’t consider that the President might be, at the very least, a bad actor and, at the most, an out-and-out criminal.
We might end up with Donald Trump for a long time . . decades, if he gets what he said he wants.
This is the argument for impeachment. It may not be politically savvy in the minds of some, but it may be the only way to save our democracy.
Think about it.
