At 195 miles per hour on the TGV the French landscape silently slips by. Farms, forests, power lines, and the memories of the past days are ever present. And, we are headed to Paris for our last few days in Europe. Europe will never be the same if Brexit isn’t reversed. It is part of the conservative wave that wants to erase seventy five years of progress. The past was no better than the present. It only seems better in retrospect.
We are going to Montmarte and staying a couple of doors down from the restaurant in the movie Amelie. We will visit the Rodin Museum . . in actuality the hotel where he spent twenty of his later years, the Galerie Lafayette, Place d’Italie – all places where we have some history and would like to create a few more memories.
The second time we were in Paris, we visited the Rodin museum. Rodin’s sculptures were placed throughout the football field sized garden. Nancy was in line for lunch at the snack bar and a German man left his wallet on the counter. She found it and returned it to him.
As we wandered through the gardens, we noticed that the eyes of the sculptures seemed to follow us as we walked by. They seemed to be watching.
Paris is not just a wonderful town to visit, but it is a wonderful place to think about what has been and what may be. We will definitely spend some time with the Rodin’s statue, The Thinker
