The Rule of Law

Black letter law is clear.  That’s why it’s called black letter law . . there is no room for interpretation.

No person, no president has ever challenged black letter law except for Donald Trump.  And, according to Eric Holder, the Attorney General for Barack Obama, the government should tread lightly when trying to hold Mr. Trump to the same rules that the rest of us must live by.  You can see his point . . otherwise other administrations might try to go after political opponents as soon as they are in power.

However, we must realize that this is an exception.  This president is a blatant criminal and has obstructed justice with impunity.  If he can’t be held accountable because he can thwart the laws of this country, then this is no rule of law.

If Mr. Trump is not held accountable for his blatantly illegal activities, what’s to stop any other President?  Why should anyone follow the rule of law if it is inconvenient?  This, of course, is what the Koch brothers and the Republicans fail to take into account when they tilt the playing field in favor of a few . . that this whole grand experiment can be subverted.

Ask the French what happens to the leaders and the monied classes when the populace fails to believe that there is a level playing field for all.

It is only the rule of law that allows us to believe that this is a fair society that needs to be supported and upheld.
