The Majority is Ruthless

The point of a democracy is that is allows for both the majority and the minority to express themselves.  The will of the majority should win out more often in legislation, and both sides should be in a position to become the majority in Congress . . . this balance swings through the years and both sides usually have their opportunity to wield power and determine the direction of the country.  That is what democracy is.

What the democracy isn’t, is the use of arcane rules and legal structures to make the will of the minority the rule of the land.  The reason, obviously, is that the majority will not sit still when tyrannical men, criminals and back-room players make the country into their own personal self-gratification machine.

The Republicans should be careful.  They have played the minority hand so well that they have been able to effectively make the government ineffective for twenty years, as it has become the playground for crooks and men and women with no moral compass.

Now, as a Republican, I have three thoughts:

The people of the country may come to realize that this form of government can be subverted by a rich minority.

Wealthy Republicans, who have lived off the fat of the poor and the hard-working middle classes and have continued to suppress the governmental checks and balances, now have a lot more to lose.

And, one has only to look at the French Revolution to realize that the majority is ruthless when it discovers it has the power of the people.
