Why do people want to blindly follow a person in a democratic society? Despite racist, misogynist, hateful and backward-thinking, an individual can gain support. There always seems to be those who would support leaders like that whether it be Netanyahu, Trump or Hitler.
I always thought that after the second world war we learned a lesson, the hard way, that dictators are not the future. They may represent the feelings of a mass of people for a short term, but those feeling change; and, when they do, the dictator, or dictator wannabe, goes to consolidate his or her power. You can see this in pre-war Germany in the 1930’s.
And, you can see it now in the Trumpian attempts to pack the court, diminish and abuse the media, and subvert the constitution to get power. At least, he is using only quasi-legal methods, heretofore untested because the constitution never envisioned that a President could be morally bankrupt. We know better now, but we have to live with a quasi or actually corrupt leader for several more years.
And, is Congress going to stop him when he attempts to hold onto power if he is defeated in the next election? Let’s hope that the majority in Congress can rise above party affiliations before the Brownshirts are enforcing the laws.
