About 25 years ago, we had a young hispanic man come to visit us in virtually all-white Mission Viejo. On his way up the hill he was stopped by the police and the police confiscated his car. He was left there 20 miles from home on the side of the road.
The next day I visited the police chief to find out, among other things, what the probable cause was for stopping the young man. The police chief was very accommodating and said he would investigate and get back to me. I received a call from the young man’s father who asked me to please stop pursuing this . . that they would take are of it. The police chief called back the next day and said it had been resolved, with no other explanation.
I didn’t pursue it any further because of the father’s request. But, it does make one wonder.
Here’s a question that I have been thinking about recently:
If the police did everything correctly and, by the ‘book’, but the results were that innocent black people were being killed and incarcerated at an elevated rate, does that mean that the ‘book’ needs to be updated?
It makes one wonder.
