I was musing the other day about the frog who was boiled to death, because he sat in the water while it was heating up. Unfortunately, he didn’t notice the incremental difference in temperature. Of course, a frog tossed into a pan of boiling water would hop out immediately.
Clearly, this is where we are as a nation. And, no one is hopping because we have all been desensitized by the national conversation.
I should say, for full disclosure, that I am a Republican . . rather moderate I would think, and have spent my life working, supporting my family, supporting my community and moving the ball along, like all good citizens, Democratic, Republican or Other.
But, something has changed, and it’s frightening to think of the parallels. Unfortunately, the lessons of World War II have been in the tail lights for so many years that the dangerous parallels have been lost.
Our primary defense to the abuse that is now pervading government has been lost. The Congress has lost its way and is unwilling to take the view as a good citizen of the United States first and with party affiliations second. Moral and ethical values for these people have been lost in the desire to remain in power. And, the ethical congressmen with high moral standards, have chosen to leave instead of fighting.
This is clearing the way for a bully who has no moral or ethical values, and, certainly, little understanding of the government.
I don’t quarrel with the desire to get something done, even if it is in direct opposition to my desires. However, this is not the issue.
The issue is that we can’t achieve these goals by tearing down the fabric of the government and the people who have dedicated their lives to make this government and this country great.
And, this is bigger issue than just party. It is bigger than just our cities and our local governments. This is an issue which calls to action every citizen, whether it be Democratic, Republican, Green or Other.
Now is the time that we all must act.
